Designer, thinker, and explorer of meaningful living
I'm Luis Portas — architect, author, and critical thinker — exploring how the systems we design also shape who we become.
Alongside my writing and research, I work with international clients to design, renovate, and manage residential and commercial projects in Portugal — guiding them through licensing, construction, and local regulations with clarity and transparency.
After two decades building environments and brands across the world, I turned my focus to deeper questions: what myths do we embed into our spaces, our tools, and ourselves?
Today, through writing, speaking, and design, I challenge conventional narratives and help others reclaim clarity, meaning, and agency in a hyper-designed world.
My upcoming book, Tethered, and my work at Iberico Nogueira Publishing are both invitations to think — and design — differently.
My latest book, Tethered: You Are Not Alone, is a philosophical and scientific exploration of the invisible threads that bind us — between individuals, across consciousness, and through the very fabric of the universe. Drawing on ideas from quantum physics, neuroscience, and ancient wisdom, the book proposes the Tethered Consciousness Theory (TCT), arguing that we are fundamentally connected, not only by matter and energy, but by shared awareness itself.
Rather than focusing on breaking free from myths, Tethered invites readers to see themselves as part of an immense, intricate web of existence — where every encounter, every relationship, and every thought resonates across a deeper network of meaning.
I believe in what I call cynical optimism — a clear-eyed recognition of our fragmented world, paired with a hopeful conviction that deeper understanding can lead to greater empathy and connection. This vision shapes all my work, from writing to design to the spaces I help create.
I create videos, write essays, and build products that help people design better futures for themselves.
Explore WorkI create video essays and podcast episodes exploring design philosophy, creative liberation, and meaningful living.
I write long-form essays on design, philosophy, and the intersection of technology and human experience.
I design spaces and products that help people engage more meaningfully with their environments and daily practices.
"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works, and more importantly, how it shapes our relationship with the world."
